So here's this dusty tutorial I created back in July. I looked back on it and realized how crappy some of it was (I mean, my airbrushing and dynamic shading are both horrible), but I figure someone might appreciate it, you know? SO~ I apologize for craptastic examples, but hopefully the information I have in this helps someone out.

I do something similar to that. Except my trick is to place several different layers over the subject and then duplicate the image,flatten it, and then control the brightness and contrast of the overall imagery. But still this is still very helpful. Great job

Yeah, I mess with hue/saturation, color balance, brightness/contrast after the entire image has been flattened and "finished". :)
