The basic concept is that the boy is in total seclusion from color. His entire world is black and white, a limited.. perception of his world around him, and the girl brings him color, where he can see his world in a totally new way. So in the words..

Trapped in the Abyss
Where color was absent

A glimmer of light
Maybe it was you

That light/color is the girl, representing 'you', and therefore when his world is in absence of color, it is in absence of 'you'.
